The Open Government Partnership has issued a call for expressions of interest
for local units to join the Open Government Partnership, with a deadline of 17 July 2020.
The opening of local governments is an integral part of ensuring the realisation of the Open Government Partnership original vision and goals. The Open Government Partnership recognizes the key role of local governments including the fact that the cities, federal states, regions, provinces, counties and other levels of local (regional) self-government provide key services to citizens that require effective and accountable local self-governments.
The Open Government Partnership local pilot program has shown inspiring innovations and practical results, from fighting inequality in Austin, Texas in the USA, participatory budgeting in Sekondi Takoradi in Ghana, citizen oversight of corruption in Kaduna, Nigeria, improving access to health services in Buenos Aires in Argentina, to involving citizens in policy-making in Madrid, Spain.
Currently, there are 78 stated and 20 local units included in the Partnership. It is expected from the new members to develop and implement the action plan, to monitor the implementation and report on the progress including participating in experience-sharing activities.
