The Society for Communication and Media Culture awarded rewards “Media Socrates” for the exceptional contribution in promoting the media literacy of children and youth for the second time.
The Society for Communication and Media Culture handed awards to educational and training staff at the awarding ceremony for activities held in the school year 2023/2024 in children-garden and schools aiming at media literacy training of the youngest.
The award winners of the “Media Socrates” for the pre-school education are Blaženka Crvenković and Sara Papak form the kindergarten Little Red Riding Hood from Ilok, in the category of primary school the award winners is Daniela Maršalek from the PS Dalj and for the secondary school category Krešimir Varga from the Secondary School Zlatar.
The president of the named Society, professor Ph.D. Danijel Labaš emphasized in his opening speech: “If you had the opportunity to read, see and listen to all the applications to the Socarated Media Award, then you would have noticed for yourself that the advice from the Socrates Oath, which is signed by teachers in some countries, was followed by all those who applied, and especially this year’s winners of the awards and honors, to whom I cordially congratulate and, to all the others I thank for the application.
The rewards were awarded by Acting Director of the Agency for Education and Training Daria Kurtić, Director of the Directorate for Media and Development of Cultural and Creative Industries of the Ministry of Culture and Media Jasna Vaniček-Fila and State Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth Zrinka Muzanić Bikić.
At the award ceremony attended were other guests, including State Secretary of the Ministry of demography and Immigration Željka Josić, authorized to perform the duties of the Head of the GOfNGOs Helena Beus, the National Foundation for Civil Society Development representatives Luka Bogdan, Children Ombudsman advisor Ljiljana Breulj Štimac and delegates of the City of Zagreb Mayor assistant to the Head of the City Office for Education, Sport and Youth Rija Bilić.
“Media literacy is becoming day after day more important part of the pre-school and high school curricula. Developing of students’ skills that enable them to understand and use the media is extremely important. Our goal is for all students to develop critical media comprehension skills of so as to protect themselves and be responsible users of media content.”
State Secretary from MDI Željka Josić in his introductory speech stated she is “happy to congratulate to teachers who besides other responsibilities do additional activities in the area of media literacy. Their contribution to the society is of great importance. I invite all teachers not to forget to include parents in the activities they are preparing who also need help in using media.”
The Head of the Directorate for media and development of cultural and creative industries in the Ministry of Culture and Media Jasna Vaniček-Fila emphasized that the Ministry of Culture and Media has got an opportunity to encourage development of media literacy in multiple ways. “From kindergarten through primary and secondary education, all the way to college, teachers have the most important role in shaping young people. With the development of digital media a number of positive changes entered to the lives of individuals, but it has also introduced people into a labyrinth that is difficult to navigate. Accordingly, I am grateful to teachers that make additional effort to help the youngest to find their way in the world of media and everything it brings.”
GOfNGOs recognized this award social value so as the Society for Communication and Media Culture with the Media Socrates was selected among the three best projects of the public call “Communication Support for Socially Beneficial Programmes of Associations”.
