Second meeting of the EU – Croatia Civil Society Follow-up Committee held in Split, 5 October 2007

The second meeting of the EU-Croatia Civil Society follow-up Committee, representing a joint body of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the Republic of Croatia was held in Split, on 5 October 2007.

The Committee was founded in February this year with the aim of establishing an additional institutional framework for the dialogue between the EU authorities and Croatia, as a candidate country, encouraging public discussions on the consequences of EU membership and general contribution to building civil society. The Committee consists of six members from the European Union and six representatives from Croatia (employers, unions and other civil society organizations).

State Secretary for European integration, Ms. Marija Pejčinović Burić, thanked EESC for its support given to Croatia on its way to accessing the European Union, pointing out that Croatian accession as full 28th member of the EU will allow for even greater prosperity and development in Croatia, but also contribute to strengthening the stability on the European continent.

Mr. Dimitris Dimitriadis, the Head of the European Economic and Social Committee, also attended the meeting, therefore showing the importance that EESC attributes to this Committee and also personally supporting the process of Croatian accession to the European Union.

With the presented report „Croatia on its Road to EU Accession“ Anne-Marie Sigmund gave her support to Croatian accession to EU in 2009, as the co-president of the EU-Croatia Civil Society Follow-up Committee on the part of EESC and the former president of that Committee. The co-president of the Committee on the Croatian part, Lidija Horvatić, also the Head of the Department for International Cooperation at the Croatian Employer's Association, spoke at the meeting as well.
